If you have been brushing your teeth for any length of time, you are probably pretty well versed in the drill by now. You put some toothpaste on the brush, run it over your teeth and you’re good to go, right? Actually, taking care of your teeth is slightly more involved than that. But don’t worry, it isn’t too involved.
Proper oral health care starts with the proper toothbrush. It should have soft bristles and the head should be small enough to reach each of your teeth. If the bristles are starting to show some wear, than it is time for a new toothbrush. It’s a good idea to buy a new toothbrush every three months, just to make sure the bristles are in good shape. Hold your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth. While it is easy brush the fronts of your teeth, don’t forget the backs and the biting and chewing surfaces. Hold your toothbrush vertically and clean the insides of your front teeth with short up-and-down strokes. Make sure that you brush for at least two minutes in order to do a thorough job.
When it comes to flossing, start with 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of it around each middle finger and curve the floss around each tooth. Start below, and then floss away from the gumline. Use a fresh section of floss for each tooth, and dispose of the floss when you are done.
Remember that no matter how well you brush and floss, there is no substitute for seeing your dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and exam.
